Just managed to get wallpapers working on my shitty Netbook running Win7 Basic:

Try deleting the game shortcuts and launching them from Steam instead. Also, pin the programs you use all the time to the taskbar and delete the shortcuts.

Oh, and now that you have all that extra space, take a look at Rainmeter. It's a neat little program.
