is it possible with this forum? if so, can we be allowed to use them..
Cant see them slowing down the site, and anything offensive would be treated the same way as any profile pic / signature

1.) They're annoying.
2.) Take longer to load (also take up more space on the server.)
3.) It takes more processing power so if theres 30 on a page it will slow down your browser.

Also, last time I checked we don't allow them in sigs either. I have them disabled though so I don't check.

1. personal opinion
2. 1/100 of a second is negligable, so is the extra 1/2mb that 1,000 animated gifs would take up.
3. like the poll says this is 2012, who still runs ie6?

and yes they are allowed in sigs, just not flashing sigs for obvious reasons.

1.) Isn't that the point of this thread?
2.) Depends on your internet connection, what if you have a data cap? It's not just loading it once, if you continue to visit the forums, it multiplies everytime the cache clears
3.) Modern browsers slow down to. It's more of a hardware thing, not software. Some people have shit computers.

Also, the forum automatically generates thumbnails so that's additional processing time of gifs. Bott would also have to enable ImageMagick because GD can't process GIFs into thumbnails

-1 Because my work computer is a POS and runs IE6 and I can do nothing about this.
Feels bad man. I'm running XP with IE8 at least at work (and Chrome, FF). Although they're testing Win7 and IE9 so hopefully we'll get that within the next year.

Yeah it sucks balls I can't even throw chrome on here cause only administrators can install programs, but I get what I get. They're not gonna upgrade me so I can slack off some more =P. I can't even block the GIFs for christ sake.

1 just reinforcing the fact that it was your opinion.
2 not many people have dial up now, and in the contex of the forum, people use plenty of multimedia, so a few 100k is not an issue, its not 800x600 images but 100x100.
3. noones computer is that shit that they cant load a forum, but can play games like tf2 and lfd2 etc.

This is true, but I'm not the only one that browses at work and work computers are not performance machines. Sometimes if a page is overcrowded with GIFs it takes this hunk o junk maybe 10-20s to fully load.

I'm gonna guess that the current forum software we have doesn't allow gifs, as we probably would already have it. That or it's been disabled supposedly to reduce lag when loading pages. If the former is true, it's not something we can do since the forum is powered by XenForo. But whatever.
I'd +1 it if I had hopes on it coming true. ;_;

It's not enabled by default since to generate thumbnails from gifs it requires a package called ImageMagick and then the php extension has to be enabled. Out of the box PHP has something called gd, which cannot do this.

EDIT: Actually GD might be able to do this, but ImageMagick can probably do it better and Xenforo is probably only programmed to use ImageMagick for this.

I feel your pain, bro... Had been running IE6 on XP for a year, then got pissed and told my boss I absolutely need Win7 since I'm managing this huge XenApp farm. Got Win7 with IE9 and feel better now.
