Long story short; I planned to build a low end $500ish that I could later upgrade to something more decent but life has 'gone south' here to say the least.

My only choice is to either

A) Use this 6 year old laptop that I likely can't fix, let alone find replacement parts for if something other than a hard drive takes a shit. Not sure how much longer it will be until something goes out on it that I can't replace

B) Go with a super budget build computer.

My goal is to run BF3 on at least low while not falling below 30 FPS (hell I could probably even deal with 20 FPS) on 1680x1050 resolution. My budget though...

$250-300

Would that even be remotely possible? I've been looking at buying mostly, if not all refurbished parts (I know, refurbished is a dirty word but not much more I can do) to cheapen the cost.

I of course run a risk doing that but it's either have used parts on a slightly more powerful desktop where parts can be easily replaced or be completely fucked if anything on my laptop goes out.

I understand something like this is extremely unideal but my hands are tied - it's going to probably be quite awhile before I could even hope to afford anything considered low end by today's gaming standards, and even with a super budget build computer I could gradually upgrade it over time at least.

So, could it even be done?

It depends on what types of graphics you want on your game. If you don't mind using DirectX 10, try out a Geforce 260. I found 2 of them for $100 on eBay. If you want DX11, then get at least a GeForce 400 series of cards, but only if it's at least a 460 or up if you want the FPS higher.

Motherboard, get at least an AMD socket FM1 or FM2 motherboard and make sure the CPU and Mobo match, since you have to be cheap, you gotta stick to AMD for now.

Here's some things to look at (ebay links): Motherboard, CPU, RAM, PSU (PSU if you're getting a gaming PC case)

I think Newegg has some DIY computers for rather cheap.. you can check there. I haven't played BF3 so I couldn't tell you what parts to get though.

I use newegg for all my computer stuff, they got decent prices and haven't had any problems with them.

Good luck

Looks like crap but made by a reliable brand, many other boards like this by MSI, ASUS, and ASrock. AM3, not AM3+

A great GPU. One of my all time favorites. As you can see here (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/540?vs=536) it beats the 7770 and will run BF3 at your resolution on HIGH with FXAA at 50FPS. Not bad.

4GB of RAM should be enough for gaming.

Don't need a case, run it as a bench on the motherboard box.

Total : $297
