Jordan Peterson believes that the freedom to express oneself and the pursuit of truth inherently involves the risk of causing offense
. He argues against the notion of a "right not to be offended" because it is subjective and can lead to censorship, stating that "in order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive". For him, real thought requires a willingness to question established ideas, which may make some people uncomfortable or offended.

  • Risk of offense for truth: Peterson views the potential for offense as a necessary byproduct of pursuing truth and engaging in genuine conversation.
  • Subjectivity of offense: He points out that what is offensive is subjective and varies from person to person, making it an unstable basis for a universally applied "right".
  • "Right not to be offended" is a constraint: He argues that a right not to be offended can lead to a suppression of speech and thought, effectively creating a "mental prison" where certain topics are off-limits.
  • Freedom of speech vs. the right not to be offended: Peterson suggests that a rigid "right not to be offended" can contradict the freedom of speech, as it would grant some people the power to control what others say to avoid causing any offense

It's not necessarily me who feels the need to say it as such but TF2 is an M-rated game and I'm tried of seeing players get muted for it when they're obviously not actual racists.

Like come on there is clearly a difference between going "sup niggas" and "hang all niggers"...
So in reality it's not that you want yourself or others to be able to say nigga without negative context you want moderation to lax on slurs

Cannot wait to join into any Skial server and see every person instantly calling each other "Porch Monkey" or say "I hate n*ggas" then quickly after everyone either says it isn't cool or goes quiet says "Its just banter/Its just a joke, snowflakes I swear"

rly if the sum total of your aspirations in life is to be able to say "sup niggas" as a white dude on a 18 year old game you gotta lock in, but hey at least this games legal that's an improvement. It's a video game bro it can't be that hard to avoid saying "nigga" or "faggot" on Skial.Com
I can literally go on casual and do exactly that if I wanted to but I can't do it on Skial because apparently you're too lazy to go into your Steam settings and enable the slur filter that was added five years ago.

I don't have a problem with actual racism still being muted for but I see no reason why instances that are not done in a racist way should be muted for.

Literalmente puedo jugar en modo casual y hacer exactamente eso si quisiera, pero no puedo hacerlo en Skial porque aparentemente eres demasiado vago para ir a la configuración de Steam y habilitar el filtro de insultos que se agregó hace cinco años.
In casual mode you're playing with strangers, but in Skial it's a community that needs to be respected.

I do not need to hear a person of your maturity level saying these things when I play FF2.
The experience will be intolerable if I have to hear some disgusting brit saying "nigga" every 5 second because he thought it was the haha funny epic troll.
Please grow up or at the very least remove yourself from this community to form your own cesspool where your horrible useless map edits will appear.
You're a full grown man , spend more time with people of your age instead of little kids. Go ride a bike outside or something if your heart can take it.
Thank you very much. Love, from France.

Saying you should be able to say "nigga" or "faggot" but bet you'd lose your shit if someone called you a welfare rat even "jokingly"

You ask people to be nice to you and respect you despite all you've done yet you can't do what a first grader can do which is just not say slurs in public. All the time you spend around kids how are you not able to learn from them basic social skills.

I don't have a horse in this race, I don't play TF2 anymore and I think even saying racist words is a violation of God's good will. I am making this post just to bring up some history and perhaps have us look at things from a different perspective, later to include some opinion.

Back in 2017 the 'culture war' was just beginning to brew. Inevitably, this spread to Skial and issues came up - I can only describe it as a feeling: most players blissfully played on the servers unaware of the 'war in heaven' (over politics) that was occurring on the forums/discord/other. This prompted me to go on as many servers as possible during prime time and poll all the average players on if they were actually perturbed by discrimination, in particular by racial slurs. The response was a resounding 'No, not bothered.' It was so resounding that BOTTIGER REMOVED THE DISCRIMINATION RULES IN FULL https://www.skial.com/threads/server-rules-update.73494/ Eventually, as time went on the culture shifted and this change dissolved, of course.

The timing of this thread is a coincidence because I was recently thinking about bumping that old thread. Not to reminisce or insight drama, but to see that a person or a community or humanity goes through wavelengths - and one of the core components that keeps us from falling off this alternating spectrum at all is at the least being able to fully express ourselves. I think censoring, even these horrible words, takes away from that vital component. This is all compounded by the fact that players have !mute and !ignore at their disposal, which makes me feel like the admins duties in these matters are made redundant and I fear some want the keep the law just to have the glee of enforcing it (something along the lines of the users who would scour HLSTATS to spam reports).

I actually think CT is right, but most likely unwittingly, because it seems his brain has been fried by the Internet (he should take a min. 6month hiatus), but this leads to another realization/issue. If the players and their cliques can't say in public they just brood and say in private. This may be why we get threads or characters like this and some of those people don't use the forums, they go to rightfully or wrongfully complain about how Skial is too strict with something like 'left leaning' admins or other.

This is just what I'm thinking and I feel like I'm missing some logic so anyone is invited to add/subtract to any of this. Ultimately, when it comes to player numbers/retention so far I'm on board with this logic (quoted from DaivdBaekr all the way back in 2017 on that original thread) ...
News to me. I doubt it will have a significant effect on server population for better or worse.
TF2 is an 18 year old game as of now - it's amazing this community has lasted this long, and we're not really collecting 'new players'. Unless Skial blows up through meme-tier virality, whether we most strictly enforce the rules or not I don't think were really budging, but at least in my heart it'd be quaint to know we have enough trust in the players not to abuse their freedom of speech. And so, I am changing to a +1 carefully.
