The pattern for mutes and ban durations (afaik) is 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, permanent? The progression makes sense but why are mutes and bans treated as the same?
You could: commit a ban worthy offence, then get muted 4 times and you would be permanently muted
You could also: get muted 4 times, then commit a ban worthy offence and it's you've a permanent ban
In both cases you'd be committing the exact same actions but the different order leads to a very different outcome

Because you are still violating a rule if you are triggering a mute or a ban. There is no reason to treat them separately, if someone, after being actioned four times still hasn't picked up on their behavior not being acceptable, why would a fifth time be any different?

It doesn't matter if you were gagged or banned for some time in any order; when you break the rules, you get punished (either by ban or mute). The reason why bans and mutes are treated the same is so we don't have players being nuisance to others on the server like somebody who was muted can grief on a server which further creates problems for the other players.
