There is something that has annoyed me for a long time about the community culture regarding "votemutes". It seems whenever you try to start a legitimate vote mute, people react poorly and tell you to just use "ignore" or click the ear icon in your pause menu. Not just the people you're trying to mute, but other randoms as well. When I say "legitimate vote mute", I am not talking about people who just talk alot, or with a certain voice, or kids, that some people might find annoying. I am talking about people who are either
a) Literally screaming into the mic
b) Playing static, or has a broken microphone
c) Playing obviously garbage music, really bad earrape, or music with garbage audio quality
d) People who are using the microphone to abuse other people verbally, or be racist.
e) People who use their microphone power to coordinate/instigate voteslays or votekicks on other people who have done nothing wrong.
People say just use "ignore". Well, yes, I could do that. But the votemute function is there for a reason. If bottiger didn't want people to use it, he would disable it. The votemute function is there for a few reasons:
a) people who don't know how to use !ignore can have them muted too.
b) non-english speakers who don't know how to ignore can have them muted
c) so newcomers don't have to be listen to static/earrape when they join the server.
d) the ignore function doesn't work in some cases with people with special characters. This is actually a way they avoid being ignored. So you have to go to the pause menu to manually ignore them.
e) It ensures the TF2 experience is the same for all players. So no conversational dissonance takes place between people responding to micspammers, and people who aren't.
f) Discourage people from continuing to have bad mic etiquette.
So to summarize, I would like mods to add clarification both in the rules and in a server message regarding the "votemute" option. That it exists to be used.
