I think it's ok to let someone update the character at single-player when they ended up missing a day or two.

I just found out the server I can use has 512mb ram & 1 cpu. Hardly ideal for Terraria.

I could host like I did for a few of my friends back in the day. (i.e Avenger, Sroy, Bobbyjoe, Rehn, etc.) The server usually doesn't lag, and I can switch it on and off.

Only problem is that it's only up whenever I put it up, so it's not 24/7.

That's fine, 24/7 doesn't really work well anyways.
Pretty much someone has to host unless we get like a $5-$10/mo server.
