Look mostly nobody is really giving any serious advice over here, (not that I blame them), so I'll take the plunge.
This is true EVERYWHERE. The internet in general, no matter how much we like to pretend it as such, is not really a complete or even a partial substitute for real life. It's also not representative at all for a vast majority of the population. The very fact that you can't be slapped in the face for being a cunt to someone over the internet who's twice the size of your scrawny ass in real life basically removes people's restrictions.
My advice? Stop giving a shit. Just get in, get your thing done, and get out. Don't waste your time with internet arguments, don't rise to internet troll bait.
Just about every major internet community has varying levels of hostility inherent to it, as well as stunning levels of idiocy and ignorance. Any random schmuck who barely knows 6th grade physics goes on the internet and boom, suddenly he's a fucking expert on quantum mechanics, and because it's the internet, he can easily drown out people who actually know the stuff. If you really tried to give a shit and got mad, you will be BOMBARDED with uninformed opinions, slurs and white noise, an unending fathomless river of bullshit that you made the stupid decision to wade in the first place. Don't make that mistake. Stop caring. Get on with your life.

I don't live in the US (nor is my native language English, by the way). In my school, they split Science into three divisions - Phy, Chem, and Bio 6th grade onwards - with different teachers, different books for each. Everyone studies the same stuff until the end of 10th grade, when you get to choose your particular major branch and the subjects in it.
The US school course and the SAT is ridiculously easy. The SAT doesn't even have proper calculus in it. Disappointing.
Anyway, my point was that most people know absolutely nothing about most topics but NO ONE wants to admit it, but the internet gives everyone a chance to act out their ego fantasy. Hence everyone reads a shitty Wikipedia article on the subject and all of a sudden they are a fucking expert on every conceivable topic. You see it everywhere. Waste a minute of your time on Reddit and you'll see it happen in no time. Hence why I prefer to be an observer, not a participant.

Also I agree about the US school curriculum. IMO not having having stuff like calculus and more difficult science courses be standard for high school students is doing future STEM majors a big disservice, and those fields are really where US education needs to be improving, anyway.

I'll say one last thing, if you all think its just the internet, then perhaps it shouldn't be, change be nicer to people hell try and make a difference, if you're all going to sit back and do nothing of course the Internets going to be a horrible place, but be nice, help people out when they make mistakes, don't just point and laugh, sure you all think I'm a retard or troll but I genuinely want to see this community be better.

The sad thing is I'm not even trying to do any of that shit, but if you want to act like a cunt go ahead, clearly your head is so far up your own arse that when you see someone else with a different opinion you go into attack mode, grow up.
The thing is, I don't disagree with you. Are we host to a bunch of assholes? Well yea we are. That's not any different from anywhere else in the world much less online. But much like the world and other places online we've got some pretty great people, I see people here who have been here for years, they've made friends, not alliances, people who came randomly and found a spot amongst this group of asylum patients in the fucking making. We've got people who even if they are assholes now, a lot of them used to be worse, or some who have calmed down a hell lot. Hell a whole bunch of us insult each other as greetings. I've found the better parts with a bunch of these people, sure I don't get along with some of them even now but that's how life goes. Some bad, some good, oh well. Overall though we're not as bad as you're making us to be.
