Finished The Catcher in the Rye yesterday, cool book. Surprised I didn't read it when I studied English, but I guess that would have killed it for me because I see studying fiction as an absolute sin. Looking forward to reading other classics like The Great Gatsby and American Psycho.
I read Catcher and, although I loved my teacher, I HATED THAT FUCKING BOOK! My teacher was great and I did well on the tests on the book, but I just couldn't stand it. It was confusing, lacked cohesion at times, and, worst of all, it stars a completely unlikable shit who failed to kill himself which is the saddest part because HOLDEN SHOULD DIE!

Don't. It's literally not worth your time.

I disagree to an extent, while the ending may have been a bit lackluster, it still tied up quite a few loose ends. If he's already read the previous two, it seems kind of stupid to advise him not to finish up the series. I do hope the movies put a better ending to it though.

I guess it takes a little bit of relating to Holden to enjoy the book, so you can empathize a bit with his character. Sorry you hated it.

Could you please explain how he is relatable? I really just see him as a unlikable jerk

I mean how he hates people who aren't sincere and honest. He hates "phonies". I hate phonies too, to some extent. I went to a private school full of them.

My problem is his attitude. He goes around either making an ass of himself or being a lazy bastard who runs from problems. I also hated what he wanted to do with his life. It is impossible to save anyone's innocence especially in the world he lived in. I understand and sympathize with the motivation, but he is still a bastard

I always just thought of him as a kid who tries to be adult but can't even come close to it due to how fucked his thinking is.

It's more like, he doesn't want things to change. The part in the museum tells me that, as it's the one of the only places he likes as "nothing changes" I think the fact he wears a hat over his grey hair is just another hint that he hates change. The ending was like, his sister was going around and around on the carousel, much like life, and she wasn't changing while she went around, so he felt happy, damn happy, in fact. There he had attained his goal. Or something. I dunno.
