VALVe fucks up a lot, but VAC is very reliable. Its the best auto mated Anti-cheat system out there.

I've spent about $400-500 on TF2 alone, not counting the other hundreds I spent buying other games

you're thinking punk buster, I believe. There have been errors in VAC before, but they were all resolved. They were 6 (apparently) invalid vac bans that weren't by bugs.
