We've released an update to the SteamPipe beta. It is now compatible with the regular game.

Now everybody can play together and admire each other's headgear. Both SteamPipe and non-SteamPipe clients can connect to SteamPipe and non-SteamPipe servers.

We are planning to convert all clients to SteamPipe next Tuesday. If you opt in to the beta before then, you will be one step ahead of everybody else. You'll be able to take advantage of the faster boot and load times. If you are experiencing the bug where Steam wants to validate your files every time the game boots, opting in to the beta should make that problem go away.

Although we don't expect that anyone will have an urgent need to opt back out, I would like to point out that if you do need to opt out, the process is very painful. You will need to redownload the entire game, and also move any custom files back to the original installation folder.

The FAQ has a lot more info.

you may just have a huge maps folder or something
try removing that folder from the tf folder and convert

only disadvantage I've had is that switching pages in my inventory takes longer
seems to be fixed now

I can't use it on Wine for some reason, haven't tried it with the native version yet though. But I saw a vid and holy crap did it load fast.

I'm currently converting since I don't have any custom content except for PVHud and I can live with the default hud for now. Already backed up my cfg folder prior to initializing the conversion.

good call. my standard keybinds were copied over but I lost my class .CFGs
fortunately for me, they weren't too important (just using the Numpad for one-button-build/destroy for Engi and one-button-disguise for Spy) and I can always rewrite them

I don't think I could live without that one button disguise.

Anyone notice that it's now like 10x larger in size? The folder before conversion was 1.09gB, but now it's 11gB.

Edit: It's because the gcfs are gone from the steamapps folder, I guess they convert them into vpks and store them in the team fortress 2 folder now.
