Every time I watch a spy video it takes a good half minute to confirm they have backstab animations because for the life of me it looks like they're doing instakill swiping with those things.

Also out of curiosity, what makes you like the kunai above all the other knives? I tried it out once but it seemed like something best paired with DR, which I stay away from. After seeing the stock watch spies maybe I was mistaken.

Terrible spies using an inferior knife in competitive play (lol steel) just because "it's cool."

Edit: not a troll, just giving my sincere opinion.

I personally feel that as spy having something to put out fire is very important and the knuai is great cause every backstab puts out fire and bleeding and fills health and when paired with the invisi watch it is really good for escaping and getting behind ppl to backstab them which you can't do with the dr cause it's too loud that's why I like the kunai

If the video is from a no-crit server there is no animation. That may be why.

I don't like the kunai above all other knives. I think most of us just have an appreciation of how powerful it can be. I still use stock on comp matches. It is a huge risk-reward weapon, once you start getting stabs, our survivability goes through the roof. I find it is easier to fight groups of enemies because if you can get a stab, you are getting healed and can either keep fighting or escape.

I switch back and forth between my stock and kunai, but I have been using the spycicle recently too since my friend gave me a strange one. If I see any Huo Long Heater heavies, I ALWAYS switch to my kunai and lol as I backstab away.

Playing Kunai has also made me better at stock knife. Starting out with 60 health you have to be a lot more careful with managing the damage you take. Sometimes the DR can reinforce bad habits because if you do something stupid you can just feign your way out of it, whereas with the Kunai, it reinforces good habits because you have to play smarter, dodge better, and be even more evasive in order to stay alive.

I think this is why most of us are attracted to the Kunai- it is so risk reward, that being successful with it can in no way be a fluke. It shows skill. For me Kunai & IW/C&D set is the anti- Dr. Enforcicle.

Learning to play Kunai helped break me of my nasty DR habit. Not saying DR is bad but it was the only watch I could use well. A spy should be able to use all of their tools well.

4/10

In competitive play the most important thing for a spy to make a key pick, getting away after isn't a priority.

The only way the Huo Long Heater can really fuck over a Spy is if the Spy is using the Spy-Cicle, but still, you can jump before the stab.

That's why you use Saharan Set. Way more survivability and you don't have to worry about noise.

I always felt like the Kunai was a troll knife, something to have fun with but not very practical. Especially considering the rest of your knife options.

Pro tip: DR allows you to rocket jump, great for getting behind the enemy.

Saharan Set
If there is a knife worse than the Kunai it's the YER. Even the set won't make it viable at all, people who want to protect their medic don't rely on the uncloaking noise (tested on the EU lobby server which doesn't have a whitelist).

The Saharan set really doesn't make the DR the perfect thing ever. Any person with half a brain can conclude a spy with a Fez running towards him and dies by one bullet can conclude he's a Saharan spy and will regularly check behind him. The Kunai is very practical, It's a hit and run knife, and it's a snowballing knife along with the YER.

But in any case spycicle and stock are always the best knives in competitive. Why? Because it's low risk and competitive isn't a place where you should really take too much risks but if you're feeling up to it. Go ahead.

Also the YER isn't really that worse than the kunai, the Kunai is only better than YER in competitive because communication destroys the YER.

yeah, its kind of goofy. Every one had monikers and I was trying to think of something. I told him it should be a joke about me being old like 'Elder Statesman' or something. And he used that :/

Oh well. I still can't believe I am somehow in a group with those spies.
Chuckwagon The Elder Statesman: "Back in my day, I remember when Egypt and Dustbowl were the premiere competitive maps" XD

I have a YER knife with 30,000 kills on it that says otherwise and usually make it into top 3 on skial servers. But knife stats aside (non-comp) YER is nice.

How many people have mics? Less then a 1/3. Even when they can yell out that a YER spy just stabbed them, about 70 percent of the time you've already chain stabbed another player (making their team search for a spy who can't possibly be you, since you can't switch classes). The main problem with is getting the initial kill but after that it has very little downside.

-Most knife's can't kill near a sentry without being shot. YER can. I can kill an engineer then sap his structures. Other's knives runs the risk of either not sapping fast enough after a stab (and dying) or sapping and alerting the engineer. A dead engineer can't knock off a sapper.
-Chain stabs? Most knives would give you away, YER never breaks disguise.

And I know I'm going to get alot of flak for this...but as a spy I go for the medic if I can otherwise go for the person (heavy usually) that the medic is healing. Less warning and you've removed the main danger, AND medics seem to go crazy when you kill the person they are healing (often chasing you resulting in their death).

And it's kind of funny to see the medic suddenly behind enemy lines without an attacking class facing your team.

I don't play competitive (at all)...just skial servers. And I agree with your statement. However, while a person might know a spy is dead ringer'ing, in a "pug" (no offense skial server) only a few players will actually take the time to try to hunt down a DR'ing spy. If I have a person trigger my DR and I know they know I'm not dead, I'll leave them alone. My work for them is already done, they are paranoid and constantly looking over their shoulder...give it a 20-30 seconds or wait for your team to distract and then go for the kill. Sometimes being an obvious dead ringer really helps (in pugs).

Also as a constant user of DR, try this. Don't trigger it when you have 5 health and your trying to fool the enemy into thinking your dead. If you do, you'll try for chainstabs with low hitpoints. Use it like a shield (again for non-comp play), to rocket/sticky jump, putout fires/bleeds, etc.

Another tip: I know fez looks like crap but always wear it. That way if you are killed with invis watch, the enemy will think your DR :D
