Make it so that new forum accounts can't give or receive ratings until they have at least 10 posts.

This will prevent people who make accounts for ban appeals from getting negative ratings as well as giving disagree/dumb ratings when they rage at their unban denial.

This will also prevent new users from being discouraged when their first few forum posts receive bad ratings.

As it is now new users cannot post links until they have at least 2 messages. Apply this to ratings as well, 10 posts shows they are actually active and may then give/receive ratings.

+1, I don't really see the point in people with less than 10-15 posts giving out random ratings

I agree because I was discouraged from doing forums for 3 months, because I was being verbally trashed by Bottiger and other's and rated dumb because of my admin application a year ago.

Yeah, then we have LadyPimpernel as well. Ratings are seriously disencouraging for newer members, and people here seem to be very quick with dubbing something as dumb.

Well on my fist day of Skial I considered every one here to be an asshole plus my rank was peon when I returned a month later ,which made it worst for me.

Someone completely new to forums does care about ratings in most cases, so +1.

Still no good reason to allow new users the option to rate or be rated.

The main thing people who are against this say for whatever reason is: ratings don't matter

ok great then why do you care if new accounts can rate or not? Do you really like giving newbies dumb ratings or something?

anyways bump

Is there are an actual problem with new users being able to use ratings, or is this because there might be a problem?
Has anyone been affected by new users abusing the rating system? if so, how widespread is it?

The main issue is the new accounts made for ban appeals and getting dumb ratings from people and then giving dumb ratings to everyone who disagrees with them. This can also be solved by disabling ratings in the Bans section but if someone is butthurt they can still go around spamming bad ratings for no reason. There is also no point it letting new users rate just like they can't post links.

That's what I'm asking, "how widespread is it?" is it just that one or two people have had it happen to them, or is it something that say, happens once a week at least? is daily?
Do people object to getting friendly or useful ratings from new users that express their gratitude?
Noone likes being called dumb, I understand that, and I agree that ratings should be removed from bans and reports sections, because people can get angered when they don't agree with a judgement call, and the rating system is an easy rock to pick up and throw.
The other point I would like to make is that the ratings give an overall reflection of our users, new and regular. If we have a problem with many new users rating dumb and being generaly pissed off, then we have a bigger problem than just that of the set up of the ratings system, however, I haven't noticed this being a problem to date, which is why I ask how much of it is assumption that there is a problem, and how much is substantiated.
