That email looks fake. Gabe said passwords are hashed. Hashed passwords use a 1 way hash function like SHA, not a reversible function like AES.

I know, I've read this. But didn't you think for a moment that sometimes people say what other people want to hear?
Also, since Valve is publicly traded company, they have to comply with SOX. And SOX demands AES encryption at the minimum.

PS. I'm not quite sure what encryption Vavle's using, I'm just sharing my knowledge on this topic. I've talked to some fellas around and I do strongly believe that there are no reasons for panic regarding "passwords being exposed". Statement made by Gabe was "have-to" stuff.
