First suggestion here, so sorry if I mess up something (looked for guidelines on posting suggestions and didn't see any). I've noticed a large amount of abuse of the votemute system, and I feel that the entire system is unnecessary since TF2 has it's own built in clientside mute. I say that it should be removed for several reasons:
  • Mute wars - PlayerB mutes PlayerA because they don't want to hear them talking, then PlayerA's friends mute PlayerB, then you end up with 8 or 9 people that have been muted (many of which weren't even speaking at all).
  • Players blindly voting yes - I've heard many people say things like "Oh, I didn't even read it. I just voted yes". This unbalances the vote in the favor of whoever started the vote. Just earlier today, for example, I was chatting with a good friend of mine ( <3 Mr. Spy) and two guys voiced their opinions ("Shut the f*** up kid"x50), yet the vote passed with 13 votes.
  • Vote timer ineffective - Many players play with friends and when their vote doesn't pass, they either ask a friend who's on that server to vote it for them or just ask in global chat. The vote then might have more support or just by luck will pass.
Things against removing votemute and fixes:
  • Spambots - Have the server kick players if they send more than X messages per X seconds, and ban if they do it more than X times per hour.
  • People playing music - Clientside mute them if you don't want to listen, some people do want to listen.
  • You not liking to hear people - Disable voice chat in the options menu.
EDIT: Also, another idea I came up with, why not a !joinvoice command that opts you into using voice. Players who haven't used it won't get voice messages at all, and players who have will get whatever is enabled (teamtalk or alltalk, based on vote). I'm not sure about the technical limitations of the source engine, though, but if you get into the source code you should be able to whip something up using the same code used to allow alltalk.

This suggestion has been closed. Votes are no longer accepted.
If someone is abusing votes, report them.

Votemute is handy for when someone ingests bath salts and instead of taking up cannibalism decides to share a horrible screeching noise with 23 people simultaneously.

I hope Bottiger puts VM removal as a frequently denied suggestion some day.

Oh, it's frequently requested? Didn't see it in the top 15 or so and checked the frequently denied suggestions and didn't see it, so I figured I would post it.

Apologies for wasting your time. :)

You don't need to apologize, I'm not sure about the forums but on the servers themselves there's always a lot of strife about VM. It's not frequently denied, but I think it will eventually be classified as one.

I do like your suggestion for the spam kick bot, if possible. I see way too much spam on the servers I play. Even with the mute vote, half the time people who spam or are pure racist have no penalty because of the fact there are to many of there friends on to vote for the mute of said person. Of course this will be avoided by just mic spamming, in which you could self mute them. Do hope something is done about this problem though.

Gag needs to stay. People's voices can be muted by yourself, but when they are being disrespectful in chat, everyone can see it, whether they want to or not

These suggestions are all currently impossible. Programmers with far more time than me have not revealed a way to automatically have people muted per player or be in a specific channel.

If you want to use voice chat, don't piss everyone off. If people are abusing it, report them. This is the best solution at the time.

I think votemute is crucial, and I get a lot of attempts on me because I make terrible puns....if there is one suggestion I might make the individual cooldown to longer...I know that admins will action those who spam, but perhaps we can if the individual players /votemenu is longer.

Ah, alright. I wasn't aware of that. I've only briefly looked at the code used to handle routing the voice data, I might look into it when I get home from classes today. Thanks for the info.

NO. The last thing this place needs is Mute and gag gone replaced with Spam Bots And CHAT FILTER. [shudder]
