Obama backs gay marriage

Why would Obama back gay marriage this close to elections it really confuses me, he wont gain a sufficient amount of votes because most people who believe strongly in gay marriage will back him anyway. Also he will lose many votes from people who only are on the edge with voting for Obama. I just dont see why he wouldnt wait until after he is reelected or when it is clear that he has lost the election.

this is totally a relevant topic and should definitely be heavily considered when choosing who you are going to vote for

There are no issues more important than this one

You act like this is something he's just started doing for the new election. He got rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell ages ago.
 
On a serious note, I wouldn't be surprised if the number of young people voting in 2012 exceeded that of the baby boomers and the generation that came after them.

And I don't know one person around my age that is actually against gay marriage. This could, of course, be because I don't associate myself with bigots.

Maybe he isn't doing it to gain votes and is instead trying to push society forward. It takes a brave man to say something like this.

I don't think he loses a sufficient amount of votes for this to be a big ticket issue anymore.

tbh he wouldn't have had those votes anyways.
 
Basically he's doing damage control or as some of us call it, Biden control. Frankly he's not saying anything anyone didn't already know.



Although I don't understand why this issue is linked to economic BS. How come I can't be for free market policies, low taxes and trickle-down economics and at the same time be for gay marriage? Because that's pretty much where I sit on this and it causes me to be repulsed by both major parties.

Exactly. Ever since Cain left I've felt progressively less enthusiastic about each candidate. I still don't understand why Santorum took the bait about social issues when it was obvious he should be making the case for fiscal responsibility.

Also I'm not entirely sure how a president with liberal ideology has liberal social views makes news, unless it's solely from the angle of making or breaking re-election.

It shouldn't, people were looking for something to be mad about for various reasons, and when they didn't have it, it was news. Also, he's the first president to say that gay marriage is fair.

I thought Clinton came around (or at least close) to that when he asked for DOMA to be repealed, but then I remembered he signed off on it years earlier.

It's a shame that for both sides approving of gay marriage is more or less portrayed as a dealbreaker with voters.

I think more people are in favor of it nowadays because everyone thinks it's sad that this issue is being portrayed as a dealbraker with voters
 
I just wanted to ask you, people. Are you opposing gay marriages? I personally have no problems with that. There will be more women available for straight dudes. In addition, homosexuals have their own right to do with their asses what they want - why would we tell them what to do?

Because the US is generally considered the most religious industrialized country in the world, and the Bible (apparently) says that gay marriage is against the will of God, so it should be no question about why there are so many that actually cares - because they are religious wackos. Either that, or they entered nobrain.dk.

And frankly, this is not an issue of people wanting gay marriage or not, it's about who gives a shit about it.
