io9 is a science-based blog, so no, it's not a scam. Of course it's written in a way that makes the article more exciting than it really is, that's media to you, but it's still factual.
 
I don't believe all the "end of the earth" bullshit people spew out. People always have some theory about the world ending and they're always wrong. I can't understand why people are so obsessed with everyone dying in some horrific event.
 
Yeah, and in the year 2,000 planes were going to fall out of the sky, and the world was going to be plunged into a new dark age because of the milenium bug.
Everything Nostrodamus predicted has come true, he also stated that man will colonise the stars by 2,500 AD, albeit self fulfilling prophecys in my opinion. So who do you believe, the Mayans? or Nostrodamus? It cant be both, predicting the end of humanity has been going on forever.
