We need a smiley for when you're about to say something, but you're not quite sure if it's appropriate, and notice you've spent more time thinking about submitting the post than actually writing it, and decide to just clear the text field and use a smiley to communicate because all these social rituals are making you feel confused (and a little bit hungry, when you think about it).
And another one for when the natural flow of discussion indicates it's clearly your turn to speak, but you're not quite sure whether you've understood what the discussion is about, nor whether you're as good at reading the natural flow of discussion as you thought you were, so you decide to appear all aloof and disinterested, but in a way which signals that you're above the conversation rather than that you're feeling apathetic and confused, so you start wearing a smug expression in your corner while everyone keeps talking and completely ignoring you as well as your intricate thought processes.
