I used to do that when I had a creative writing class in high school. We had a few months of poetry assignments, and I did exactly what you just did. I took an existing poem/song and translated it several times (using Babelfish back then), and then fixed some broken English, and viola! Instant, original poem that the teacher couldn't find on Google to claim I plagiarized it.
