Looking to use a VPN going forward. But i have a few questions:

1. Does it affect speed
2. Will i get banned from Skial servers for using a VPN
3. Is it easy to use/set up

Ello Johnny.

1. A VPN is similar to a bridge with lanes. It doesn't matter how fast is your car, a bridge can only fit a certain number of cars in a lane at the same time.
What you should get from this shit ass metaphore is that VPNs have speed limits, which is the internet connection of the server itself to the internet. If it's higher than your internet speed, you're good to go. If it's lower, your speed will be limited to said VPN speed.
Free VPNs tend to have a lower speed cap, while others have better speeds. They can vary from 4 to 77mbps (example values) depending on the provider.

2. VPNs offer an IP that's shared with other users.
I'm not sure about the odds of having someone on that same network play on skial, but yeah.
You will NOT get banned for using a VPN/proxy if your profile is public and you have more than 10 hours in tf2.
This does not apply if the IP is linked to a hacker, in which case any accounts will get permbanned automatically.

3. You can either make your own VPN server at home which is relatively hard to setup, or just get an affordable paid VPN from a provider and set it up (it's relatively easy, and using it takes no effort once the setup is done).
You can also get a VPS and turn it into a VPN (that way you'll have your own IP) although this requires intermediate tech knowledge.

Cheers.
fuck how did I have the energy to type all this

TapTap provided a really nice outline.

However, to make it simple:

1. Does it affect speed
Yes. Depending on VPN service provider you'll get 30-60% speed loss.

2. Will i get banned from Skial servers for using a VPN
Last time I checked - no. Not for a private VPN at least.

3. Is it easy to use/set up
Very easy. You just install the client and when you're ready to use your VPN tunnel - you simply launch the client, and you're ready to go.

Looking at your "all of a sudden" interest in VPN, I assume you've got a Copyright Infringement Letter, didn't you?

Yes.

Now, does every PC in the house need to use one or is it just the computer that is on Utorrent. Also, can i just turn it on when using Utorrent and turn it off when i don't need it? I seem to only "need" it when i am on Utorrent.

You may run it only off PC which you're gonna use to perform illegal activities (lol). And yes, you can turn it on BEFORE even getting the torrent file, download the torrent file, start torrenting, when download is complete - delete the torrent file and turn off your VPN.

Keep in mind though that even VPN does not provide you with 100% protection against copyright ownerts.

Do you really torrent that much stuff that you're concerned with copyright claims? I've been downloading music and movies for a few years and not once received a cease-and-desist from my provider

I torrented 1 movie about 3-4 years ago, and got a call from my provider saying that if I didn't delete the file and if I ever torrented again they would cut off my internet connection and put me in jail.

Never torrented again.

So familiar.. Porn magnates realized they started losing billions of dollars.

They way they capture your download is via torrent file's pool. They simply join the pool and record IP addresses of all peers and seeders:

Once your download is complete, your torrent client sends from your IP "complete" flag along with confirmed hash - and that's what they record to use against you. Anyhow. This kind of "evidence" is not really admissible in court anyway since it could be easily tampered.

I personally tried using IPVanish and HideMyAss which are considered to be premium top-of-the-line VPN providers and the best I was able to get out of them was 70% of my actual speed.
No surprise you're getting >60% of speed loss with cheap stuff like PIA.

I used to have a self-hosted VPN server with a mere speed decrease of 10%.

OpenVPN with AES-256 cipher, if anyone wants the specifics.

I actually have OpenVPN embedded in my router:

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet though :D

I knew i would have speed lowered with a VPN. I read you guys opinions. But hey, it keeps me anon when i am torrenting and certain stuff. Which is when i will use it. So no biggie. I can wait another 30 minutes to jack off to the latest tranny porn.
