Help Me! Steam overlay disappearing randomly in Team Fortress 2

lately, I have noticed that when I play TF2, the overlay disappears randomly, like when I'm talking to a friend. one second I'll be typing, the next, the overlay fades and I may hit a bind such as reloading a lot of stuff in the game.

Are you using any FPS configs? Compatibility settings? Using a lower DirectX version?

to my knowledge, DirectX is the latest version. FPS configs probably not. custom HUD yes. hit counter yes. compatibility settings I don't think so.
