So back in March this year the suspension on my SteelSeries Siberia V2 broke and I hacked it back together. But today my headset broke again, this time the left speaker went out, so now I am looking to get a replacement. The headset was purchased in 2012 so there is no valid warranty on it now.

I did a quick search here on Skial and Google and found the SteelSeries Siberia Elite Prism to be a potential replacement which is only $122.99 on Amazon. Has anyone here used this headset? If so, what has your experience with it been like? I am also looking for any other headset options besides the Elite Prism. I would like to keep the spending at or below $140 not including shipping and taxes. I am not interested in any wireless headsets either.

Tom's Guide review on best gaming headsets of 2015 <-- This is currently why I would consider the Elite Prism.

Any advice would be great. I am not interested in reading outdated posts and threads from previous years.

Never mind. Now I'm looking for just headphones with decent quality at or below $200. Any recommendations? Not interested in getting a mic right now, though I may in the future (modmic or something)

First result http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U

Decent reviews and rating, 3 options to which I don't know the difference between (except one is red).

So I picked up the Elite Prism I linked above and sure enough it was defective, what a great first impression. Now to find another headset...

I think I'm going to opt for high quality headphones and consider a mic on another date. Anyone got headphone recommendations? not headset this time.

Some research on quality headphones (not headsets) turned up these two:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ULAP4U/ Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones 38 ohms
http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B0006NL5SM/ Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, 250 ohms

For the DT 770, I've read that I would need an amplifier to get the best results out of those 250 ohms. However, that would exceed my present budget of $200, and I don't fully understand the pros and cons of using or not using an amp with the headphones.

Still looking for other options though.

edit- then again, I don't think I have a good enough soundcard to take advantage of the 770, so uhh...
edit 2 - nvm, external dac + amp means I wouldn't need a high end sound card I guess [ src ]

i have Sennheiser HD 598 and they're great

they're only 50 ohms which means they don't get too much benefit from an amp + dac combo (which is good if you're on a budget though)

read this thread if you want to know more about amps and stuff like that

edit: i also got a cheap-ass speedlink clip-on mic when i got my headphones and it has served me well enough

When I was looking for headphones a couple years ago I was also between those 2. I chose the ATH-M50's. They still work perfectly and I don't regret my decision.

Also for a mic I got this: http://www.modmic.com
It attached pretty nicely to the headphones and you can move it around.

Why not to go with Bose? Those or those...

Those are my favorite. Have them for my iPod.
I'll check these out later tonight.

That's very useful, thanks. And yeah, I was considering a modmic in the future too.

I'm going to continue researching this until Monday or so and then I'll come back and post my decision. Thanks for the input.

I almost forgot about this thread as I g ot caught up in so much shit. Anyway, I decided to try the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO - 250 ohm version. It should arrive on Saturday and I'll see how it sounds.

This is a closed back pair of headphones. If this pair works out fine, in the future I will be getting an open-back pair of headphones, possibly the DT 880 as it has many good reviews and what not. More on that later.

That's a headset, I was looking for headphones.

Anyway, my DT 770 Pro studio headphones arrived today, and I must say they sound pretty good without an amp and digital analog converter. I'm looking forward to how they will sound when I get those next month. More on that later.

they can be used as both, you can unplug the headset peace and swap in the mobile adapter. It kicks the shit out of beats too, literally hear everybeat and note in the song, 10/10.

Too bad I can't buy any more headphones because if I buy another set of headphones - my wife will kick me out of the house (I already have like 4 sets...) :D

I ended up returning the DT 770s too and got a full refund. I will be trying the semi-open design DT 880s. They will arrive Monday and I will post how they work. The other ones I was/maybe still am considering are the HE-400 and HE-400s by HiFiMan.

so I got my DT880 Premiums to today and so far they sound AMAZING. the bass isn't as strong as the DT770s (as expected), but overall the audio is much better. they are semi-open back design so the soundstage is much larger and therefore there's no need for that simulated 7.1 surround sound bullshit. not quite as big as a fully open backed headphone but it's great nonetheless. now to get a modmic
