Rewatching Madoka right now, a strong candidate for the anime of the year. But Steins;Gate was pretty spectacular too, even if it had a slower pace and was more modest in presentation.

Those two are quite similar, actually. The viewer gets lured in thinking "oh this looks like a nice anime" and then nnnnope. Also time travel.
