I'm never sure if HS is actually better than the Vanilla Shotgun. Is the extra damage worth it to sacrifice the larger clip?

At perk 3 or higher you can hold both shotguns. Vanilla Shotgun is better for taking out trash mobs like Clots, Crawlers and Gorefasts. It's clearly much better for humping, it can put down Husks and Sirens with little difficulty and it's probably the most cost effective weapon in the game behind the Katana. Hunting Shotgun, if you fire both barrels at once, can put a scrake down at perk 4 on hard. That's assuming you're at point blank and he eats a majority of the spread. It can also rip through a mob that's descended on you at point blank. HS really is a weapon for those "Oh, Shit!" moments. It can also do a fair amount of damage to Fleshpounds, but the AA12 is far more reliable for that purpose.
