It's more powerful, but a bit slower. it's better for taking out multiple enemies.

I prefer the vanilla shotgun, I like being able to use my shotgun and not just use my pistol like 70% of the time since I can't waste shotgun bullets.

more clip=more DPS, even if the hunting shotgun does more damage, less clip=less damage
