I made the original background transparent, then set what remained as an upper layer. Blurred the edges with a low-opacity eraser tool (something I learned by screwing around at the time) and changed the overall hue of the top layer so the eyes and stuff were orange-ish. Made another semi-transparent layer underneath and stuck Mr Bones in there, then slapped another regular layer in above that with the moon.

Can you do a background for me for thanks giving and Christmas? I have no experience with this kind of stuff.
