So, bullying is now an everyday thing in schools. A lot of people say it's wrong but unfortunately, they don't stop it when they see it for whatever reason they may have. Now online, people say it's a different story. I beg to differ. Cyber bullying is just as bad as bullying in real life. There's just a screen and a username protecting who you really are. It's gotten to be so bad that the UK has made some laws about it and have enforced those laws. Now I understand the same old argument which is "it's the internet, get over it". Which, by the way, is a bullshit argument. Why? Because people have gotten cyber bullied to the point of suicide. So clearly, things you say online have an impact on real life. So, why am I making this post? Skial doesn't have rules against bullying. Not many online groups for TF2 or for any mass multiplayer games do. But, I feel like something should be done. These games we play are for entertainment. Not to go online and bash some kid for being a kid or some random guy you don't know just because you're better. Frankly for me, I have a whole lot more fun just hanging out with some friends on TF2 than I do bashing some kids on CoD. So, I think something should be done. Not necessarily a rule but have a sort of incentive or something to prevent bullying and the sort from happening online on Skial servers. This isn't a suggestion thread because I don't really know what to suggest(yet). What do you guys think?

Also, I know that a lot of people are going to mark this "dumb" or "troll" just because you don't agree. That's fine. But, at least comment on the thread as to why this is a bad idea or as to why you don't agree. And like always, please keep this thread clean. No hating at a specific person or group of players. Just what you think about an incentive to keep the servers cleaner.

It's a competitive game, as such you're going to get those who thrive on proving themselves better than others.
Online is different to school, you are forced to stay in school, you are not forced to stay playing a game.
The UK government are wrong to make laws against online bullying, they should be investing in social acceptance rather than penalising those who follow like sheep (something that schools teach society).
As you can see my stance is that those on the server should stand united against anyone who tries to ruin the game, but they don't. Society obviously doesn't care, so why should a rule be enforced banning something that is accepted?

How hard is it to click the ignore button on someone who's bullying you?

That's why these laws are stupid...

Another thing, look how the media treats celebs and such, they are attacked for what they wear, what they do, what they don't do, this is the example being set to society.

Not a rule but personally, I think people should at least try and prevent this sort of stuff from happening. Stand up for the people getting bullied and all, you know?

If you are anything in real life like you are here then i have no doubt you are bullied at school for being a rat and telling on other kids.

It's a good thing that you care enough to make a post you know will get hated on, however I disagree about making a rule on Skial or an incentive.
I disagree with it because Cyber Bullying will always happen and always be a thing, Skial making one little incentive probably isn't going to change cyber-bullying that much even on Skial itself.

Plus, people who don't mute/quit when they are being "SERIOUSLY HARASSED" need to learn to do so.
On top of all this, why would people take anything they hear from a stranger online seriously unless they are in some deep deep depression?

You could argue that we should do it for those depressed people, however, it's going to happen regardless. We don't have enough admins to monitor every "incident".
In an ideal world, we would all be nice to each other, but that just isn't the case.

There's no way we can even provide some incentive against it without throwing in some dumb blanket rule that could get everyone muted.

It is my opinion that what happens in video games is not really cyber-bullying. The term bullying itself gets over-used and ends up diminishing the occurrences that are actually bullying. 1. Usually bullying is ongoing. It is repeated and habitual. 2. For bullying to occur there has to be an imbalance of social or physical power.

If we are talking about cyber-bullying, we are talking about someone that is though of as a nerd, ugly, someone without friends, etc, getting picked over Facebook or something over time by some that is popular, or athletic, etc.

In video games these conditions are almost never met. So the trash talk in video games is not cyber-bullying. It is just people being assholes. I really don't mind that young people have to deal with mean people at an early age, because that is pretty much what life is; learning to navigate a sea of assholes while trying not to become one yourself.

People will always try to get on your nerves when they have the possibility to do that. It is really only up to you, in what way you are going to react about it.

Thanks for the people who actually had something useful to say. I was just thinking that if more and more people discouraged it, it would happen less and less. And I mean actual cyber bullying. Not shit talking. I see it all the time.

I've been bullied in the past (online and offline) and over the last seven or so years I've noticed a trend. When I started working in electronics in Walmart last year most of what I was already catching up on was confirmed for me.

Technology and social networking are still a new thing, and there are a lot of people that don't understand how a lot of it works. This results in children getting pieces of technology they have no business in having, and parents handing their children video games they have no business playing. This isn't new and it's always happened with things people don't quite understand. The thing that separates this from the past is that we now have the power to communicate with people from around the world quickly and very easily. It's easy to feel safe and say things you normally wouldn't say because "it's not real" and the fact that you are hiding behind a screen and fake name. I do the same thing. It's much easier to tell someone they're shit when you can't see who they are.

And people don't know how to go about handling this situation because it's something that's very recent. What they don't understand is that people will always be assholes and there is nothing they can do to "put an end" to cyberbullying. I understand what they are doing but many anti-bullying communities are going about it the wrong way.
