Good basic start,
Next time try to make something a bit more complex since adding textures to an object is very simple but a decent start for beginners.
I remember using software called SketchUp at school and I could make myself a house pretty quick. I'm pretty familiar with programming though, but being able to do something like that might help you work with angles and blending shapes into an object e.g windows.

I've never heard of it, could you link to it?
You should be able to just use the materials, models and entities that are installed with Hammer when you install TF2.
That's best, because otherwise people who play your map have to download lots of custom things.
