Hey

I want to upload a dem. video to a forum.

Problem: I am unable to open the file. It is saved in my tf folder, but I cannot open it or do anything with it.

Trouble shooting:
I tried opening the dem. file with programs I already have installed on my computer.
I think I might need to download Quicktime?

I just want to get help before installing anymore programs on my computer without further guidance.

Thanks

Upload the .dem file on mediafire or mega.nz and send me the link (if mega, send full link with key).
Ok, so instead of installing mediafire, I installed bandicam instead. Bandicam uploads files as avi's which is great! But I can't seem to record in-game; It only records my desktop.

I don't understand. Why are you trying to "install" mediafire? I believe it has a web-based uploader. So does mega.nz. You just upload to it. Also, it's preferable for us to have the demo than an avi, but you're welcome to use it.

Can you please try to send me a demo you recorded in console by uploading it to mediafire or mega and sending me the link?

Oh, it said that I had to download media fire on softonic.

But anyways, I tried mega.nz but it said that I do not have access to my folder when I dragged the file to the red upload cloud.

E: It doesn't seem to work when I access the file from my windows library

To my knowledge you cannot use a demo file in a video player like Windows Media Player or VLC if thats what you are trying to do. And it sounds like you attempt that.

RMSniper already tried to explain to you that you can watch a demo file only in the game with "playdemo nameofthedemo".

Perhaps you have some sort of administrative error affecting that folder.

Then how do people record in-game videos and are able to upload them to the forums if the demo files only work in game?

What you do is basically, record a demo in the game, upload that file to a host of your choosing, i prefer zippyshare, but others use mediafire or mega.nz. We will download the file, put it into our tf2 folder and are able to watch it.

If you want to record footage that is able to be played with a video player or for youtube (the files will be bigger if you do that, so dont try sending us something else than a demo please), then you will need a capturing program that records your pc screen and audio. I am using Fraps, others use Camtasia or similar software. Nvidia has a software called Shadowplay. Most of them cost some euros, dollars, rubels, camels or whatever your currency is.

I hope this explains most of your questions.

Because we download the files that are linked to us, drag them to our tf folder, then open them on tf2.

I am trying to use bandicam right now to record in-game footage, but I am unsure how to do that, for all it lets me record is my desktop. Do you know how I can fix this?

Also, thanks to both of you for being patient

Your best bet is to stick to using .dem if you're looking to record game footage (assuming you're collecting the footage to be used as evidence for a report) and submit a report here on Skial.

If you're just trying to record your game footage for a video or something I'm positive there will be a few tutorials to your liking on YouTube or the software's official website.

Demo files can only be played in the Source Engine, since they are not actually video files but rather a recording of the movement of players and entities that just gets replayed in the engine.

As I think somebody said, Demo files are the best form of evidence since it is the raw footage.

Unfortunately, I was looking to only upload my personal videos onto youtube, not so much as a report submission to skial.

Good news is I am very close to recording my in-game game play by using bandicam. Bad news is that it only seems to record my desktop, but that's my only problem. It seems to capture the audio, but not the video. It's kinda like a close but no cigar type of deal.

If you want, I could walk you through OBS. I dunno if Bandicam still has a watermark, but OBS definitely doesn't.
